CERBERUS - BUCKLED PRODUCTION TUBING WIZARD

A unique feature in Cerberus is the ability to model the effect of buckled production tubing. The tubing may be buckled due to thermal expansion effects or because of incorrect installation (setting down too much weight on the packer). If the tubing is buckled, it may be possible to run in hole without a problem, but as soon as you start to pull out, the cable or pipe pulls tight against the helically buckled tubing and the resulting drag prevents you from moving. You are left with no option but to break or cut the wire/pipe.

The Wizard has two stages. First, the buckling of the production tubing itself is modeled. This requires additional input information describing the tubing and the fluid and casing behind it.

You then specify the downhole set-down weight. Often, you know only the surface weight, so you have to iterate manually until the correct surface weight is obtained. If you don't know the surface weight when the tubing was installed either, you can experiment with different set-down weights to investigate the severity of the buckling and hence determine if it is likely to pose a problem.

Once the buckling of the tubing has been modeled, you can proceed to investigate the effect on running in and out of the hole.

In this example, you cannot pull out without exceeding the breaking strength of the pipe.
